Echoes from the East | Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibition
SEIAE Barcelona 2026 — Echoes from the East is an international cultural project situated within the European public cultural framework.
The exhibition will be open to the public from May 7 to May 29, 2026, at
Centre Cívic Sant Martí, Barcelona, Spain.
The project is curated and organized by SEAMC (Sino-Europe Architecture Media Center), with the support of Barcelona’s municipal cultural system.
Project Background
Within the European public cultural context, opportunities for contemporary Chinese art to be presented as a complete curated exhibition in municipal cultural institutions remain rare.
Echoes from the East emerges in this context —
not merely as an exhibition, but as a cultural practice that places contemporary Chinese art within the lived environment of a European city.
The exhibition is open to the public and invites artworks to be experienced, interpreted, and discussed within a real urban cultural setting.
Curatorial Concept
Echoes from the East
“East” here is not treated as a fixed cultural identity, but as a dynamic and evolving condition.
The exhibition does not aim to define what “the East” is,
but rather to explore how contemporary Chinese artists perceive reality, construct meaning, and respond to the world.
It focuses on artistic practices shaped by:
social transformation
cultural memory
material experimentation
individual expression within a global context
Exhibition Content
The exhibition will present works by contemporary Chinese artists, including:
Painting
Mixed media
Video and moving image
Spatial and installation-based works
The curatorial approach emphasizes:
experimentation with materials and visual language
the relationship between individual experience and social structures
reinterpretation of tradition in a contemporary context
artistic expression within cross-cultural environments
Rather than presenting “Chinese art” as a cultural symbol,
the exhibition situates these works within broader contemporary discourse.
Program Structure
Beyond the exhibition, the project extends into a series of public cultural events:
Opening event
Artist talks and dialogues
Public workshop (ink & landscape practice)
Live music performance
These activities aim to bring artistic practice into everyday urban life, fostering direct engagement with diverse audiences.
Venue
Centre Cívic Sant Martí
is part of Barcelona’s municipal cultural network (Xarxa de Centres Cívics).
As a public cultural institution, it plays an important role in community-based cultural production, exhibitions, and artistic exchange.
Hosting the exhibition in this context means that the works are directly embedded in the city’s public cultural environment.

but part of an ongoing cultural initiative.
The project aims to:
position contemporary Chinese art within European public cultural systems
establish long-term cultural dialogue between China and Europe
create a sustainable platform for international artistic exchange
SEIAE will continue to expand across multiple European cities.
